I have knit one pair top down and two pairs toe-up, and I much prefer the toe-up method! So far, I&#39;ve only done one at a time on 5 dpns. My first pair of socks, discounting one worsted-weight cuff-down practice sock, were also toe-up. And 90% of all the socks I&#39;ve knitted since have been as well. I definitely prefer it... not least of all because every time I try to cast on something in the round, it ends up twisted.
